Leukaemia

How leukaemia affects families

Whatever the age when diagnosed with cancer, support from close family and friends is not only great comfort, but often a necessity in order for everyday life to continue.

One of the hardest things for all of us was Anton being in hospital in Oxford when we all lived in and around the Bracknell area in Berkshire. To be there to support him, his parents Tony and Vanessa drove up to the hospital almost every day to be with him. This in turn left them exhausted, and with other problems such as taking time off work and no time for any cooking or cleaning. Thankfully they had family and friends to rely on, with people volunteering to do everyday chores such as cooking, cleaning and walking their dogs, leaving them more time to support their son.

The support Anton directly and indirectly received from both his family and friends made so much difference to his life. If everyone that cares about the patient can make a small positive contribution to their life, it can greatly reduce the toll on the patient and those closest to them.
