Anton Day

What Can I Say About Anton

A poem by Tony Bellamy (Anton's Uncle)

What can I say about Anton?
What things don't you already know?
What words go some way?
In helping me say
That we miss you more than you know

Someone, somewhere needed Anton
They must have needed a son or best friend
But that can't be right
Because early that night
We were sure that it wasn?t the end

I waved goodbye to young Anton
He smiled and whispered ?good night?
I?ve been wrong when I thought
"It's the last time"
But that night I knew I was right

The next day I found Anton sleeping
A vicar was stood by his side
I was asked by his mum
"Please be godfather"
At his baptism I did reside

I wish they had asked my permission
To take him away from that bed
I wish they had sought my approval
Coz this is what I would have said

Find someone who's quite a lot older
Find someone who's lived a long life
Find someone who's grey
Who would happily say
They'd experienced kids and a wife

Not someone as young as poor Anton
Not someone so strong and so brave
Not someone who?s so much to live for
Not someone who still likes a rave

But in life we don't always get choices
And we had no choice on that night
Someone else makes all the big choices
But in this case their choice wasn't right

If you're here it's because you loved Anton
Or here as a friend of a friend
Or you heard of his smile
As wide as a mile
Or was with him right up to the end

Anton, we're all gonna miss you
But don't think this is the end
Coz tonight you'll be seeing
Us celebrating you being
A son, a nephew, a friend

So what can I say about Anton?
What things don?t you already know?
These words went some way?
In helping us say
That we miss you more than you know

Party on dude!
